India is one of the fastest-growing countries in the field of journalism and media having more than 900+ permitted private news/television channels, which has created innumerable opportunities and job prospects for the students pursuing journalism. The current trends predict an increasing scope in career as a journalist in digital media, news apps, and digital newspapers.


In order to become a Journalist, students can take up any stream with English as a major subject in class 12, and score 50% marks (for general) or 45% marks (for reserved categories) to be eligible for a career in journalism. After 12th, they can pursue a major in English, or any Undergraduate or Postgraduate Journalism Courses, such as BA Journalism or Communications, or a Diploma Course in Journalism. However, a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication (BJMC) is the most preferred course to become a journalist in India.

A journalist plays an important role in the development of the nation. A journalist usually gathers information about the things happening in the nation in different fields such as entertainment, finance, business, politics, sports, culture & arts, history, and economics. To become a Journalist it is important to pursue Journalism programs or courses after 12th or after graduation.


Subject Combination: Students interested in becoming a journalist can do their 10+2 from any stream in school be it Science, Commerce, or Arts. The only prerequisite that is needed to pursue journalism is English as one of the major subjects in class 10+2.


Eligibility Criteria: The list of eligibility criteria for becoming Journalist are listed below,

  • Candidates must have passed their 10+2 with a minimum of 50% marks from any stream.

  • Candidates from SC/ST or other reserved categories get a relaxation of 5% marks.

  • The 10+2 should be passed from a recognized central/state board of education.

  • Some colleges/universities have the criteria of English as a mandatory subject in 10+2.

  • For a master's degree, candidates must have a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication with a minimum of 50% marks.

  • For PG Diploma programs, a candidate must have a minimum of 45% marks in graduation.

  • Some of the universities/colleges also ask for a valid score in the entrance examination conducted by the respective university.


Types of Journalists Listed below here are some types of Journalists based on their job roles and the area of specialization they have expertise in.

  • Social Media Journalists: The job role of Social Media Journalists focuses on gathering the news around the world and providing it to the readers via online platforms such as Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

  • Civic Journalists: A Civic Journalist focuses on the everyday problems in people's lives. Ongoing protests and events will always be the cover stories for a Civic Journalist. Generally, citizens are interviewed and asked about their current issues, obstacles and opinions on different political matters.

  • Agricultural Journalists: The main role of an Agricultural Journalist can be determined through the title as well, they mainly cover the news regarding farm lands, farmers, crops, rising and decreasing prices and modern agricultural practices applied in farming.

  • Cultural Journalists: A cultural journalist is responsible for delivering news related to the different events happening at different places. These events are mostly religious, regional or cultural based.

  • Solution Journalists: Solution Journalists ensure that the news that is delivered to the newsroom does not have any false or fake news and provide the solutions to fix it. This also involves content writing.

Steps on How to Become a Journalist? There are six major steps described below that should be followed by an interested candidate to become a Journalist.

  • Decision Making: There are certain skills required to become a journalist, if you have a good command over languages,good writing skills, alertness and an investigative mind you can simply choose to be a journalist from your school time only and try to enhance these qualities day by day.

  • What subjects to choose: It is very important to choose the right subject combination that will help you in pursuing your career as a Journalist. Subjects like English, Social Sciences, Humanities etc. might help to enhance your skills and thinking abilities to pursue a career in journalism.

  • Which Entrance Exam to appear for: Almost every reputed university or college conducts their own entrance examinations but some are conducted at national level and are conducted by central universities mostly which are also accepted by other affiliated colleges or universities. So, appear for the entrance exam that is conducted by your favorite college or which is accepted by other colleges also.

  • Select a Good College: Choose a college that is affordable in terms of fee structure and holds a good placement record in past years. Also, do have a look on the qualification of the faculty members of the college and facilities and opportunities that are provided to a student studying there.

  • After Qualifying the Entrance Exam: It is quite important to stay serious for your career and education while pursuing graduation because at last your grades will matter and try to enhance your knowledge and skills as much as possible during your graduation which is surely going to help you in future.


Journalism Courses

  • Students can pursue a major in Journalism or Communications or a diploma course in journalism. However, a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication (BJMC) is the most preferred course to become a journalist in India.

  • After graduation, they can take up a master’s course in journalism or mass communication.

  • LSR New Delhi, Asian College of Journalism Chennai, Madras Christian College Chennai are the top colleges offering Diploma in Journalism.

  • Most colleges offering Diploma in Journalism courses admit students based on performance in a relevant entrance test, and a personal interview, wherein their general aptitude is tested.

  • A few colleges also provide direct admission based on the merit.

  • The entrance exam is conducted by Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC).

  • The average course fee ranges between INR 10,000 to 5 Lacs.

PG Diploma in Journalism

  • PG Diploma in Journalism is a 1 year diploma program pursued after graduation to train students in various fields of journalism.

  • It deals with current affairs and latest topics on journalism with proper knowledge and practical skills.

  • To be eligible for a PG Diploma in Journalism course, a student should score 50% marks in Bachelor’s degree in journalism.

BA Journalism

  • BA Journalism is a 3 year undergraduate course in the arts discipline that focuses on news and media industry.

  • A candidate with 50% marks in class 12, from any stream is eligible to take admission in BA Journalism after class 12.

  • The top colleges that offer BA Journalism are JMI New Delhi, Chandigarh University, LPU, DAV Indore and Christ University, Bangalore.

  • Admission to BA Journalism course is based on merit, while some colleges conduct entrance exams and a round of PI.

  • The average course fee to pursue BA Journalism ranges between INR 20,000 to 1,00,000.

BJMC Course

  • BJMC or Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication is a 3-year undergraduate course which imparts knowledge on latest trends and research in media and journalism.

  • To be eligible for BJMC, 50% score in 10+2 from a recognized university/board is required.

  • IPU CET and DU Journalism Entrance Test are common entrance tests through which admissions are granted.

  • In Delhi University, the BJMC course is offered as BA (Hons.) Journalism and Mass Communication, therefore you need to meet the required qualification criteria to get admission.

MA Journalism

  • MA Journalism or Masters of Arts in Journalism is a full-time 2-year postgraduate course for graduates from journalism backgrounds seeking a career growth in the media and communication industries.

  • Candidates who have a bachelor's degree in journalism or any other related fields are eligible to apply for the MA journalism program.

  • Admission is usually based on the marks scored in the entrance exam.

  • The top colleges offering MA Journalism are Sharda University, Mahatma Gandhi Mission College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Panjab University, Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication, Amity School of Communication, Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT), etc.

MJMC Course

  • MJMC or Master of Journalism and Mass Communication is a postgraduate course on mass communication for 2-years. It involves the study of Newspapers, Magazines, Cinema, Radio, etc to convey latest information and news to the audience.

  • To be eligible for MJMC, students should have a Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline like journalism or mass communication from a recognized university with an aggregate of at least 50% marks.

  • Admission to MJMC is done on the basis of candidate's performance in the entrance test followed by GD/PI or on the basis of merit.

How to Become a Journalist Abroad? The procedure of becoming a journalist abroad can be a bit different from the procedure in India. As the Employers in Foreign prefer the candidates with a Master's Degree in Journalism along with a Specialization of International Reporting or foreign affairs. So, if you're to be an international journalist you need to complete your master's degree first and must have good communication skills and command over language.

Eligibility Criteria: For pursuing bachelors courses in journalism abroad, you need to have proficiency in english by passing proficiency tests such as TOEFL, IELTS, or PTS. For a masters’ course in journalism abroad, you need to have the following requirements:

  • A good score in English Proficiency Test: IELTS or TOEFL or PTE

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or any other fields

  • CV/Resume

  • Letter of Recommendation (LOR)
